The Power of Markets

In an effort to drive sales and increase profit, Wal-Mart is doing the unconscionable.  Well known for being the outlet of poorer American’s, Wal-Mart is raising prices on all basic needs products.  This, in the middle of the current economic struggle we’re going through is proof enough that Wal-Mart is evil.

Huh?  Wait?  That’s not accurate?

Some Perspective: Big Oil Style

I trend Right.  Actually, what I like to say is that I like being “Left” in a “Right” world.   That is, I enjoy the fact that there are armies of men and women out there who work their asses off so that our nation and world can be what it is.  Yet I also enjoy playing the role of individual freedom spoiler in my little life.

I like fighting for the little guy.  I like pullin’ for the underdog.  I want the immigrant to hit the big time.  And I want the oppressed to rise up…if only to become part of the machine.

Competition: Island Style

I was shopping for some computer periphery this afternoon.  I found that I’m not alone in appreciating Puerto Rico:

Puerto Rico Competition

Identical shopping carts; 1 from Wal-Mart and one from “Competencia”.  The Wal-Mart savings?  14%.

Puerto Rican shoppers can save 14%, or $12.68 on $90.70, by shopping at Wal-Mart.  Further, because Wal-Mart exists, people who never shop there even save money as the competition is forced to keep pace.

A Rose by Any Other Name…

Bait and switch.   That’s all it is.See, when someone tells you that a can of beans is 20% off, but they have raised the price of that can of beans by 25% first, it’s called a “bait and switch”.  And it’s common among shucksters and politicians.

The fact that Obama is pulling the same fast one shouldn’t be surprising.  The fact that he is baitin’ and switchin’ with the prison where we hold our terror suspects SHOULD be surprising.  And, I suspect, it’s surprising to him that we would be a bit upset with it.

Republicans Can Be Leftists Too: Part I

I am going to have to start a new category:  Republicans Can Be Leftists Too!

See, it’s not so much the fact that I mind that the “other” team wins, it’s that they win using techniques I object too.  And when the Republicans do it, well, I can’t just let’em off the hook.

So, we have this new forum where I wanna point out Republicans restricting Liberty.  Where we show people in politics will do whatever it takes to remain in power; not govern.  And that the fight we are fighting is not just the Right vs.s the Left, but rather us vs. tactics employed by the Leftists.

You're Not Gonna Believe This

The leak in the Gulf is not Obama’s fault.

Whatever happened 5000 ft below sea level happened independent of Obama being President.  Things break, bad things happen.  And Obama being President didn’t hustle this disaster into existence.  Nothing he could have done, or not have done, would have prevented this from happening.

Republican Rules Are Just as Bad as Democrat Rules

A lot of what I write about here bashes Democrats.  Partly because I have long associated myself with the Republican party; self-criticism is a gift. Further, we have a radical Democrat in office backed by a liberal Congress in both chambers.  And the last reason that I go after Dems more than Repubs is that the errors of the Leftists can impact economies and States.  The errors of the conservatives, while damaging, typically are not impacting on the same scale.

With that said, I know I hammer the Left.  But I can’t let this one slide.

Oil Spill: Helping or Hurting

As I’ve said before, I know a little something about managing a “break/fix” situation.  And from where I’m sittin’ BP ain’t doin’ a very good job.  Now I’m not plugged into the information like I would be if this occurred on my watch at work, but there seem to be key components missing in this effort.

I’m not getting the feeling that information is being communicated effectively.  For example, we still don’t know how much oil is entering the gulf each day, in short, we don’t know how big or small the leak is.  Unacceptable.

Next, it feels that we’re working in serial.  We have one solution that is dreamed up, prepped, deployed and then monitored.  When that doesn’t work, we go back to the beginning and start over.  Fresh.

Health Care: The Market Solution

Government has a role; no doubt about it.  No one wants to live in the Wild Wild West where the gun ruled and the vile were able to take advantage.  We need to be able to depend on a level playing field when it comes to what’s legal and what’s not.  If you make a contract with Pete to sell your horse for $150, you need to be assured that you’ll get that 150.  If not, you’ll learn and the price of the next horse will go to $225, just to cover the cost of not gettin’ your money.  And it doesn’t take an expert to tell ya’ that payin’ 225 for a 150 horse ain’t good for business.  Productivity goes down, fewer horses are sold and the whole Wild Wild West goes straight to, straight to…well, Greece.

Power Hungry Leftists

At some point, the results have to implicate the system.  At some point, we have to push back from the table and see what it is that we have caused to occur.

Has the rhetoric of our elections brought about that things that we have promised?  ProtestsOr have we caused the exact opposite to occur?  In our quest to provide food for the masses, have we, in fact, brought about the opposite?  In an effort to set to work the poor, have we taken from them the opportunities that bring about job creation?  In short, is what we are doing working?

Or, perhaps, as citizens, we have to step back and begin to wonder if it’s really the aim of the government to provide in the first place?
