Quote of the Day

One of my favorite blogs and maybe the reason why I keep at this like I do is Coyote.  It’s an excellent read full of real world business experience [he owns his own company], intelligence [double Ivy] and humor [just flat out funny].  Further more I like him because he calls it pretty fair; being a Libertarian he is equally able to find faults with the Right and the Left.  As I said, good quality stuff.  But today, he knocked it out of the park.

Why Debating Liberals is Like Picking a Lock with a Wet Noodle

I admit it.  I watch Bill O.  I think that he tries, tries I say, to be the fairest of all of the opinion guys on the cable shows.  Beck and Hannity are right-wing with Hannity clearly in the bag for Republicans and the politicians in the party.  Olbermann and Madow are so far to the Left that you can see ’em on the horizon if ya look Right.

ACORN: Gone

Wow, the good news keeps rolling in over here at tarheelred.  First it was news that Fannie and Freddie are going the way of the dinosaur and now we learn that ACORN will never turn into that giant oak tree.

The national group ACORN is folding, an official there, Kevin Whelan, said in an emailed statement:

Fannie and Freddie Done

Thank gawd!  To finally see the two agencies almost single-handedly responsible for the financial crisis of the last 2 years on the ropes almost makes up for last night’s horror show.  Almost.

“It’s clear that Fannie and Freddie, as they currently exist, should be put out of existence, which means the important question is what combination of entities public and private will replace them,” said Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

Markets In Everything: Inventing the Old

In a stunning display that there are markets for everything, a group of entrepeneurs have “invented” Polaroid film:

NEW YORK – A group of engineers and enthusiasts who leased an old Polaroid film factory in the Netherlands announced Monday that they had successfully reinvented instant film and will start selling packs this week.

The news gives new life to some old Polaroid cameras. The company, called The Impossible Project, will sell film for SX-70 cameras made in the ’70s as well as more recent cameras that take 600-series film.

Each film pack will cost $21 and produce eight black-and-white images. The company plans to introduce color film this summer, and expects to make 1 million packs in the first year. The film will be sold online initially, but the company expects to make it available in some stores as well.

Amazing.

On a side note:

Had this been the government running the film industry we never would have advanced beyond the Polaroid film.  Instead, we would be looking at ways to cut costs and reduce service.  Rather than re-inventing the old film, we would still be making it, selling it for $31 a pack, yielding 4 pictures per with a successful “take-rate” of about 80%.

How sweet it is.

Health Care Bill: Don't Repeal-Make Better

I’m pretty scrawny.  Built for lovin’-not fightin’ has been my motto since I was like 7.  So I am leery at the Republicans thoughts of repealing this bill.

Union Damage: Teachers Union Edition

If it were up to me, I fire every union teacher in my schools.  And hire back the good ones on the condition that they consider themselves “management”.

Wanna Know Why We Spend So Much on Medical Care?

Because we can; just ask Celine Dion.

America is the world’s richest nation in the world.  Never in history has a generation enjoyed as much discretionary income as we currently do.  The price of food, clothing and shelter has never, ever, been lower.
