ACORN: Gone

Wow, the good news keeps rolling in over here at tarheelred.  First it was news that Fannie and Freddie are going the way of the dinosaur and now we learn that ACORN will never turn into that giant oak tree.

The national group ACORN is folding, an official there, Kevin Whelan, said in an emailed statement:

This is excellent news to Liberty loving American’s the country over.  ACORN was an organization more bent on political ideology than it was focused on helping the poor or oppressed in their communities.  If anything, I feel that ACORN used their position to actually manipulate the very people they were trying to help.

As someone who fears people in power, I naturally look to the government with a suspicious eye.  However, the desire to corrupt and repress is not solely the domain of the government; corporations and other institutions are quite capable of doing the same.  I FIRMLY believe that community organizations are the source of sustainment and hope for people around the country.  I firmly believe that a local community is better equipped to identify and provide relief to those that need it.  And, AND, withhold that relief from those who don’t deserve or abuse it.

ACORN just wasn’t that group.

From the beginning they have been an organization with a very specific political agenda.  They have embraced corruption and coercion as a policy.  They have advocated strategies and tactics be employed that most American’s would object too.  Their time has passed.

Surely the people involved will form new groups.  New groups with the same agenda.  But if this day has shown us anything, it has shown us that we can shine the light of day into their organization.  And it will fade away.
