The war is over, the Dragon is slain.
And what do we have to show for it?
Just shootin’ from the hip and not really digging into numbers? I’d say, “Not much”.
What started as a slow season has suddenly picked up wind, pardon the pun. Behind Earl we have Fiona and Gaston, both named. Both tropical storms.
So, fascinating expereince the last two weeks.
As I mentioned, I’ve been working on a plumbing problem at my house; the main line broke near the water meter and I needed the whole reun replaced. It was just too expensive to continue to dig and patch.
So, I obtained estimates from 4 plumbers and chose 1 of ’em.
Now, with the plumbing project complete, I am working on repairing/replacing the gutters on my house.
Same song, different verse. Obtain 3 estimates and pick 1.
Lemme’ tell you that there is an incredible difference between the customer service in gutter guys and plumbers.
While the plumbers were late, ill prepared and in 2 of 3 cases failed to deliver a quote on time, the gutter folks were not only on time, they called to confirm. They were polite and engaging. Further, the quotes, when not delivered on the spot, were on time professionally done with photes and diagrams. All neatly done on a PDF.
I got to wondering why this was. My conclusion?
Plumbers are licensed. Gutter guys aren’t.
Licensing is just another method to keep new competition from entering the market.
I dunno. Sometimes it feels that we’re fightin’ the fools fight. Tilting at windmills.
People get to vote who they wanna vote in. If you don’t wanna pay taxes, find 51% of the population that feels like you and vote that guy in.
Stand for the unpopular, the Right, the Just…stand lonely.
But sometimes I get to stand with the crowd.
I skipped 5000 because I went from 48 days between 1000 hits all the way down to 65.
Today, we are back to 48 days between 1000.
Kinda trivial nonsense, but it makes me feel good.
I listen to the Right. Except for my morning commute, where I listen to Brad and Britt, I get my radio and TV from the Right. My news, I get from more main stream sources; Economist, Reuters, CNBC, Wall Street Journal and NY Times.
But when I watch or listen, it’s from the Right.
So I started watching Maddow.

There are things that people say. And then there are things people do.
And you can tell their priorities by one of em’.
You can “tell” me all flippin day long that you CARE about educating America’s youth. That you CARE about teaching.
But when you don’t DO anything that shows you care about educating and teaching, forgive me when I call bullshit.
Because it’s hard for a person who wants to get elected to tell the people doing the electing that they need to suck it up.
While I’ve only been politically jazzed for 2-3 years now I have always wondered how “other people” vote. You know, do they vote for what’s good for them and them only or do they vote for the better of “the system”.
For example, if a road is going to run through my backyard means I lose my house but it’s good for the community, should I vote for it or against it.
Can you imagine how different a father would discipline his children if they could somehow “vote him out”? The only reason we successfully raise our children is that we create rules that they otherwise would not generally abide.
Same for politics.

Ever.
As I realized that I wasn’t providing content, I stepped it up.
The result?
I have had the best month ever here. With 5 days to go.
