What Is An “American”?

A while ago I was debating with a fellow blogger.  The subject was this:

What IS a “real American”?

My response:

Well, technically, you are real AND you are American, so—

However, America and being an American is more of an ideal than nationality. For example, it is very easy for citizens of other nations around the world to become “American”. I wouldn’t ever think that I would be “Japanese” should I ever obtain citizenship in Japan.

No. America and American is an ideal; a mindset. A mindset that says the individual is sovereign and does not serve the state. The ideal that the individual is given rights from Deity and that those rights are a priori to the state. That at it’s most basic form, the state is nothing but a collectivism that would protect individual rights.

A man has the right to his person, his life and his production. Should some one attempt to violate that, he would be acting within “justice” to prevent that restriction of his rights. The state then, is created to protect the rights of the individual.

Liberals do not believe in this. Liberals feel tha the state comes first and that rights and Liberty are derived from the state. Following, you believe that it is the roper role of government to provide for the needs of the citizens absent any restriction of individual rights. And you feel that to enforce this proper role of state, you can legislate it to be so.

And so it is that you legislate theft.

If you were to ring my doorbell and ask that I provide for the shelter and relief of my neighbor and I say no, you would walk away; perhaps upset, perhaps sad perhaps disgusted. But it would not occur to you to use force of gun or sword to coerce me to provide access to my production in an attempt to provide for my neighbor.

So, instead, you use the force of the state. Rather than knock and ask, you legislate and demand.

THAT is what people mean when they say people aren’t “American”. It means you are not living the ideas that are uniquely American.

Open discussion.

Yeah, About That Whole Stuck Accelerator Thing?

So, I wonder how many people who heaped blame on Toyota will admit they were wrong?

The Department of Transportation, in its long-awaited report on Toyota’s infamous accelerators, has concluded that cases of cars suddenly speeding off on their own were the result of either sticky pedals, floor mats jammed against the pedals or, quite simply, driver error. In fact, the report cites driver error for most of the mishaps.

Nice.  Driver error.

And for this General Motors The American Government caused untold damages against Toyota.

Go government!

I Don’t Think That Word Means What You Think It Means

The most famous line in the world: North Carolina State Politics Edition.

With a charging Republican majority in North Carolina, the State is getting ready to make some serious budget cuts.  People are going to have to sacrifice, to be sure.  And the deeper and sooner that sacrifice occurs, the better off the financial stability of the State.

Yet, no one can accept that fact.

Health Care: Market Style [Literally]

Are they waiting for bread or medicine?

So, I needed some bread the other day.  I dressed in my best thermal and made my way down to the local state run community bread line.  With luck I’d be able to get half a loaf of 5 day old bread 3 days early.  Times is tough in the state ya know.

Actually, because food isn’t either:

  1. Distributed by the state
  2. Used as means of compensation

I went to my local for profit market driven food market.

In addition to my fresh bread, I bought wine from California, Champagne from France, beer from Seattle and Saki from Japan.

Olive oil from Italy.  Chocolate from Switzerland.  Blueberries from Chili.  Bananas from India.  And fresh organic tomatoes from right here in North Carolina.

But the MOST amazing thing I saw in my fresh daily market just 1.5 miles up the road?

The Break We’ve Been Waiting For

When I was growing up I went to a public school.  It was and is a small farming town in rural Minnesota.  As kids we would ask each other :What religion are you?”  The answer would be Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist or Presbyterian.  There wasn’t anything else.

At Christmas, we sang Christmas songs.

The school reflected the community.

No more.

Unconstitutional!

It would seem that there IS a limit to what the Federal Government can mandate.  There does exist a line that they may not cross.  There does come a time, when the Rights and the Liberty of man is A-priori to the State.

Obamacare has been ruled Unconstitutional in Florida.

Long live the Republic!

How To Build a Good Baseball Team? Fire Bad Baseball Players

Wanna know how to build a good school?

Fire bad teachers.

And this is fitting as WCPSS’ new superintendent takes the reins today.   And as crazy as this sounds, I’m going to offer up as an example of how to do that none other than our fine President, Barack Obama.

Men Are Better Than Women At Everything Except —

Well, virtually everything.  This includes making money.

And now for the latest in 21st century news, women are even better at getting elected than men:

AMERICAN politics has a glass ceiling that keeps women down. This is a wisdom so conventional that Hillary Clinton, in conceding to Barack Obama in 2008, could safely earn cheers and tears by thanking her supporters for those “18m cracks in it.”

The only trouble is that empirical analysis has not found a bias against female candidates. In fact, a new study in California suggests that voters are, if anything, biased in favour of women. That glass thing in American politics, in other words, might be an elevator, not a ceiling.

In the Democratic races, women fared much better than men. This might be expected, because voters seem to associate women with more “liberal” issues (starting with, well, women’s issues), and Democratic primary voters tend to be liberal. More surprising, perhaps, were the results of the Republican primaries. Conservative voters tend to be more concerned with allegedly manly issues such as law and order and defence. This should put female candidates at a disadvantage. But it didn’t. Even among Republicans, a male name carried no advantage.

In half of the political races, women had an advantage.  In the other half, there was no advantage to be had; for men OR for women.

It might be time to put the bras back on ladies.

There is Talkin’ The Talk…

I’m new to politics.  I’m a junky, but I’m a new one.

For example, I don’t know that politicians have been forever promising to reduce spending only to increase it.

I don’t know that we’ve been tricked and treated for ever.

But I do now.

Which makes Michelle Bachmann’s proposal pretty unique.

We Did NOT Elect Republicans to Act Like Democrats!

Yo!  North Carolina Republicans [and, frankly, Republicans everywhere] we did NOT elect you to run around thinking that you can just treat people any ol’ way ya want.

Be consistent with the concepts of Liberty.
