Years ago Delta Airlines acquired Northwest Airlines. And with Northwest came the Unions.
Now, as the companies are finalizing the merger, the heavily Unionized Northwest employees combined with the non-Unionized Delta employees are voting on representation.
And the Unions are losing.
Big time.

And the hits just keep coming in!
There’s been a lot of election talk this week, but there was also a historic union vote within Delta Airlines. On Wednesday, 20,000 Delta flight attendants came within 328 votes of unionizing.
Awesome!
People understand what is good for them and what’s bad for them.
And they gravitate accordingly.
Well done Delta!

But I was wrong. I heard a story today that absolutely stunned me. It’s a story of innovation within the public schools:

I was reading through the Star Tribune today, The Minneapolis newspaper, when I came across this nifty and exciting headline:

Excellent. A start! Not the end, but a start.
Just in case any of us have forgotten, the point of a Union is too…..
Shortly after being ousted, Mr. Rosselli did create a rival union, and now he is trying to lure many of his former members — 43,000 workers at Kaiser Permanente, the largest health care provider in the state.
On Monday, workers at 331 Kaiser facilities across California began voting by mail on whether to bolt the S.E.I.U. and join Mr. Rosselli’s group, the National Union of Healthcare Workers.
Ahh yes. Mr. Rosselli left his old organization because they simply weren’t representing the worker like he thought they should be. As such, he is building a NEW organization so that the “little guy” is taken care of.
Right?
Wrong.
There are things that people say. And then there are things people do.
And you can tell their priorities by one of em’.
You can “tell” me all flippin day long that you CARE about educating America’s youth. That you CARE about teaching.
But when you don’t DO anything that shows you care about educating and teaching, forgive me when I call bullshit.
Recent analysis of changes to Hong Kong are getting press in the Economist. A new law is going to be passed setting a wage floor in Hong Kong. For years, the city has managed to grow, thrive even, without the common law known as Minimum Wage.
The legislation is set to impose a minimum wage between $3.00 and $4.00 American. Not much by our standards, but then again, perhaps our standards are a bit exaggerated.

There are a number of things wrong with Unions. 
They reduce jobs. They price out the under skilled of a job. They make products more expensive. They force restrictive trade agreements. Really, there’s no end to the nastiness they elicit.
But the story of the retired Marine being forced to join a Union is a perfect example to illustrate just how ugly I think they are.
