Lot’s of talk about taxes. Mostly it was last year during the Lame Duck session, but with the State of the Union coming up, we’re back to talking about ’em again.
It seems, normally I suppose, that folks are divided as to whether or not tax increases create or destroy jobs. Or, in the inverse, do tax cuts creats jobs or not.
It’s an interesting debate. But for another time.
I wanna suggest that until the actual vote to make ’em permanent takes place, it doesn’t matter.
Consider this:
We knew it wasn’t gonna take long. As shock and horror melted away into grief, which in turn melted into rejoicing, we have time to reflect on the impacts of this tragedy.
Because they are elected to “do the people’s business”, our elected officials are going to feel obligated to do just that.
To be sure, folks are gonna line up and voice their complaint, their grievance, their solution. And they’re gonna say, like everyone before them, “Restrict more rights!”
Except they won’t say it like that.

When Barack Obama won and announced he was going to fundamentally change America, I shuddered. I believed him, and I shuddered.
See, I don’t think that Obama loves the idea of America. I don’t think that he is even close to comfortable with the concept of individual freedom, liberty and responsibility.
Not at all.
So this doesn’t surprise me:

The debate rages on; almost always never resolved. Do tax hikes benefit or harm economies?
On the one hand, the argument is that the State needs the income to do the People’s Business. On the other hand, taxes are a burden and a head wind for economic growth.
Who wins out?

In my life I have learned a number of things. Perhaps chief among them is the ability of people to demonstrate just how unlearned they are.
Amazing.
I have yet to learn that the most egregious of these examples come from our elected officials.

We see what happens when a House of Congress has a significant hold on the majority. And we see it when the part line is at its strongest; we get the US House of Representatives. A powerful and respected body to be sure, but one that moves so fast and with such little input by the minority it can be dizzying.
If the partisanship is bad enough and/or the majority strong enough, the minority, in some cases, may not even need bother show up.
So we have the filibuster. To calm the rushing tide of the majority. To protect the nation from the tyranny of the majority. To that end, it has served it’s purpose for a long long time.
But the time may have come to change the rules.

There is nothing government can do to help.
Government, in it’s purest form is a concept rooted in “negative liberty“. That is:
Negative liberty is defined as freedom from interference by other people…
That is, Liberty is best defined as that state found when living alone, on that “deserted island” where no man can take or demand.
On that island, a man is free and owns his liberty.
If, in the course of living, another should try to take from him his liberty, he is within “justice” to defend his self, his property and his life.
Government is nothing more than the collective acting as the individual in saying, you may not do this thing.
So be careful when the government comes to you offering you help.

I didn’t listen to Obama live the other night as he delivered his speech in Tucson. Partly ’cause I was busy but mostly because I didn’t wanna listen to him talk on about the events.
I’m jaded. I’m bias.
My die is cast.
He has a long LONG way to go to create an environment in which I see him in a different light than I did, say, yesterday morning.
But I watched this speech just now.
Taking my morning coffee reading the internet. Saw an article that grabbed my interest:
America’s Healthiest & Unhealthiest States
I decided to take a look, I was interested in what the survey used as criteria in making their ranking. While the exact order of the list would be interesting in a trivia sort of way, I knew that the northern states would rank near the top while the deep south struggled. I guessed that Mississippi would rank either 50th or 49th.
Low and behold, what to my wondering eyes did appear?
