Minnesota Vikings Fail

I recently posted about the fact that just because a person or group of persons are horrible at a thing doesn’t mean that they aren’t that thing.  My context was, of course, the Leftist President Obama, but I used the Pittsburgh Pirates to illustrate my point.

Just because the Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t had a winning season in 18 years doesn’t mean they not a baseball team.  It means that they are a SHITTY baseball team.

Not surprisingly, this rankled long time [?] reader [actually I’m surprised ANYONE reads this 😉 ] and friend of mine who correctly pointed out in the comment section:

just because the Vikings havent won a super bowl doesn’t mean they aren’t a football team, just means they’re a shitty one.

Turns out she’s right:

Science validates experience: Vikings are hardest local team for fans to root for, says study

The numbers on this one probably didn’t need crunching, but a business publication went ahead and did it anyway: Your Minnesota Vikings are the most difficult of the four major pro teams in the Twin Cities for which to cheer.

It appears as though the criteria was based primarily on wins and losses in the past decade — not heartbreak, off-field shenanigans or the emotional wringer of QBs who just like to have fun out there — which makes the Vikings’ victory more impressive.

From the Business Journal:

The Vikings ranked as the 30th most difficult team to cheer for among all of the 122 teams in the four major professional sports after finishing seventh among the NFL’s 32 teams. That was the highest mark among local teams, and this is one list where you don’t want to be at the top. On Numbers based its rankings on the principle that a perennial loser is harder to root for than team that consistently wins.

Ouch!

Truly, the Vikings are AWESOME at sucking.

However, I do feel better:

The Wolves ranked 37th overall, the Wild 56th and the Twins 76th. The Washington Nationals were the hardest team to root for — finishing slightly ahead of the Detroit Lions.

It makes me feel a little bit better about the prospect of sending the “Christian” to the “Lions”!

Groan.

Politics Republicans Democrats and Awareness

For a long long time I resonated with a “team” more than I resonated with a concept.

I mean, I grew up pullin’ for the Vikings, so, naturally, they are the coolest team in the whole world and the Packers just suck.

And the Cowboys [Drew Pearson—shiver]

And the Steelers

And the Falcons

I digress.  Anyway, teams.

My dad liked Reagan, but not until later in life, much later, did I learn that dad was a democrat, and pretty hard core too.  We would often argue and debate and each of us left the conversation seriously considering the voting tendencies of the milkman.  I wonder how much of that was due to the fact that I grew up THINKING dad was a Republican?

Weird.

I’m pretty convinced that I’m a Christian because I grew up in a Christian family in a Christian town in a Christian nation.  I think that’s pretty clear.

However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to try and back away a little bit and see things…twice.  It’s an old Billy Joel song, “Things I didn’t know before I learned by doin’ twice….”

Anyway, its awareness, being able to see and focus and count the things going on around you.  Sometime they happen so fat, ya miss ’em.

Try it:  See if you can count —

See what I mean?

Oh The Shame

I’m a mutt.  I have parents that German and Swedish.  I can’t make the case that my whole heritage is contained within the Nordic states, but it can be said that half of me is.

Further, I’m from Minnesota.  A state dominated by Swedes, Fins, Norwegians and the like.  It’s who we are, don’tcha know?

And I’m proud that part of who I am has been chosen to represent the state’s football team.  Who wouldn’t?

He’s Still Out

In my mind, the greatest World Series Ever Played took place after the 1991 season.  The Minnesota Twins vs. The Atlanta Braves.

Kirby Pucket

Black Jack Morris

And if you are a Braves fan, the one play that sticks in your craw is this one:

Believe me, I know your pain:

Anyway, head to Target Field this summer and get your “He’s STILL Out” bobble head for yourself!

Luck and Skill

Like just about everything else, football is a game that combines intuition, skill and luck.  There are a lot of things that are repeatable and therefore predictable.  Equally, there are a lot of things that are just dumb luck.

Things that are predictable?

Offensive Passing Efficiency.

Things that are Dumb Luck?

Defensive Interceptions.

And one other very important thing that is often just dumb luck.

Markets and Brett Favre

HA!

He’s back.  The NFL adjusts, the Vikings adjust and the Saints will adjust.

But markets?

Yup, them too.

Senate Race 2010: IX

I have been tracking the whole Brett Favre thing; especially in Vegas and then on Intrade.  And while I was there this morning I stopped by the Midterm Senate race page and saw this:

The Number of seats expected to be held by the Republicans that clears 50% has gone up 1 from 47 to 48.  The market is clearing at 48 seats!

Excellent news on a Wednesday morning.  Almost as good as seeing the chances of Brett Favre playing again at 96%.

The Eagle Has Landed

I rediscovered The Sports Economist the other day. And was immediately impressed with their post on Brett Favre.

Basically, the Sports Economist was saying that the Vegas odds changed when Favre “announced” his retirement on August 3rd.

On August 2nd, odds showed the Vikings with a 38% (+130) chance of winning the NFC North, with that number dropping to 32%(+175) by the morning of August 4th.

With those reports being largely ignored, the Favre numbers in Vegas were at:

Vikings at +150 as of August 16th.

Now that reports have Favre coming home, we are at:

Minnesota Not Being Shown

It would appear that Vegas doesn’t wanna show the odds of a Minnesota NFC North Championship or ANY NFC North chance at all until Favre announces Wednesday!

Go #4.

The Downside to Being Right All the Time

One of the downsides to being right all the time is that the burden to continue to be right is hard to bear.  With a batting average at 1.000, it can be difficult to handle the pressure each day.  And to make it especially hard is having to support positions that strike pretty close to my heart.

March 1st, 2010: Chance of Recession in the Next 12 Months — 00.043%

Using data from the New York Federal Reserve, the chance that the United States will enter a recession in the next 12 months is 0%.  The Vikings have a better chance of wining the Super Bowl!  For perspective, you have to go back to September of 1983 to find a period in time when there was less of a chance.
