Health Care: 2011 Style

The boys are at it again.  Back on health care.  And, to their credit, it’s gonna be the news of the day.  For many many days.

For example, the new House is going to convene Wednesday and theya re going to, repeat, going to, vote to releal Obamacare.  Gonna happen.

And then we’re in a world of debate as the country wrestles with this problem throughout the next two years.  And when I say 2, I mean that Obama is going to be fighting this through his next election campaign.

Anyway, onto Brad and Britt

Health Care the Right Way

Compensation.  What one offers another in trade for goods or services.  Most often today, it’s money.  That is, I pay the service station money in exchange for gasoline.  Or, I pay the tavern in cash in exchange for beer.

Occasionally, the compensation may be something besides money.  Then it becomes a sort of barter.  One party trades a good or service in exchange for another; wheat for milk.  Dental work for electrical work.  Whatever.

Another example is health care.  Rather than our employer compensating us in cash, they instead compensate us in insurance.*

Imagine, if you will, if our employer compensated us in groceries rather than cash–just like health insurance.  What would our world look like?

They Know This Healthcare Law is Crap

It really started a long time ago.  While the Democrats controlled the Senate with a bone crushing majority, they knew, they KNEW that they had to have 60 to pass Obamacare.

So, they id what they had to do, scheduled vote after vote and passed the thing in the dead of night on Christmas Eve.  The bill wasn’t perfect, but they could send it to the House, tweak it, and get it through later.

But then Scott Brown won.  So the only option left open was for the House to pass the Senate Bill as was.  And they couldn’t do it.

Only they did.

But they knew then that what they had done was crap.

They knew it then.

Bed Bugs

My prediction:

Bed Bugs will save between 1 and 3 million people per year.

PER year.

The bed bug.

If Democrats Are THAT Stupid They Deserve What They [don’t] Get

Okay, so turns out that there is a concept in law that describes how parts of laws and/or contracts are interpreted.

The definition:

In law, severability (sometimes known as salvatorius, from Latin) refers to a provision in a contract which states that if parts of the contract are held to be illegal or otherwise unenforceable, the remainder of the contract should still apply. Sometimes, severability clauses will state that some provisions to the contract are so essential to the contract’s purpose that if they are illegal or unenforceable, the contract as a whole will be voided. However, in many legal jurisdictions, a severability clause will not be applied if it changes the fundamental nature of the contract, and that instead the contract will be void; thus, often this is not explicitly stated in the severability clause.

Severability clauses are also commonly found in legislation, where they state that if some provisions of the law, or certain applications of those provisions, are found to be unconstitutional, the remaining provisions, or the remaining applications of those provisions, will, nonetheless, continue in force as law.

Now, I didn’t know this.  But I:

  1. Have never written a contract.
  2. Have written a law
  3. Voted a a bill that would eventually become a law.

The fact that there are people in this world who have done either 1, 2 and/or 3 and STILL don’t know this rule about Severability is NOT my problem.

But it DOES speak volumes as to their qualifications to do any of the above!

Value Based Decisions

We make ’em every day.

Do we want this product knowing that if we buy it, we won’t be able to have that product.

This for that.

Is it worth it for me?

When Left Alone

The market.  She’s great.

When left alone, AND when “regulated” to the point that contracts are enforced, private property rights are recognized, will grow.

Always.

Never not.

So when folks were looking at the health care system and saw a bloody mess, they should have stepped back and said:

“Let it be”.

Where Brad and Britt Got it Right

I beat up on the guys from time to time.  Now, in my defense, it’s easy huntin’, but still.  I take the boys to task.

However, THIS morning, they got it right.  Our topic is Health Care.  Some of the “benefits” of the new law are coming on-line and we are beginning to see the effects of that.

Some are good.

Some are bad.

Specifically bad is the fact that McDonald’s will be dropping their health insurance plan, their mini-med plan, because it doesn’t conform to the Federal mandate that plans are to pay out80%-85% of their premiums in claims.

Here is where I think the boys from Greensboro got it right:

You Can’t Do It

I’m listening to the Brad and Britt show this morning.  The topic of the hour is taxes and health care.  Both are timely and appropriate topics.  Health care reform is being implemented soon, or at least portions of it.  And taxes, well, taxes have been the hot topic because of the expiration of the “Bush Tax Cuts” as well as the new Republican “Pledge to America” that’s being released this afternoon.

Both topics are fascinating.  And, to a degree, related.

Any way, while discussing the reforms that are kicking in soon, Brad takes the stand that if you object to Health Care Reform, you can’t take advantage of it.  “You Can’t Do It” he yells, “You Can’t Do It”.

This, of course, is asinine.

That Whole Life Expectancy Thing?

Yeah…not so much.

It turns out that there are a number of problems in determining life expectancy numbers.  As I mentioned the other day, in some cases, nations aren’t reporting their “deaths” correctly.

And THAT could make a huge difference.
