Tax Hikes and Tax Cuts

Let’s get one thing straight.

We ALL agree that we ALL should pay SOME tax.

The government needs money to pay for things that governments do.

We can disagree about what a government should do and how much it costs that government to do it, but serious, we have to pay some form of tax.

That said, what we tax and how much we tax is a whole conversation that needs to be had.

Confusion in Durham

It’s heating up.  And something has to be done.

We need strong leadership on the issue and we need it now.

Sadly, Obama isn’t gonna be the guy to do it.

1.  He simply doesn’t know HOW to lead.  Which, of course, has been my main complaint all along.

2.  He doesn’t WANNA lead right now because it’ll interfere with his election prospects.

So, it’s left to the states and the towns.

And THIS is what you get when that happens:

Mandatory Fun: We Own Hundreds of Thousands of Foreclosed Homes

Look, owning a home is a good thing.  I think everyone should buy a home.

In the same way that I think everyone should pay off credit card bills every month.

In the same way that I think everyone should contribute to their retirement.

That is, I think that you should do all these things IF YOU CAN.

Sacrifice

There’s an old saw that says:

There’s a reason it’s called “Risk Taking”.  If there wasn’t, they’d call it “Sure Thing Taking”.

The same holds true regarding decisions of fiscal responsibility.

Greed Played No Part in the Gulf Oil Spill

Wow.

I don’t get the feeling that this will go over very well at all. For a long time, heck, since the first day of the explosion, the prevailing thought has been that the oil companies sacrificed safety for money.  That it’s been greed that caused the oil spill and if not for said greed, we never would have had to live through this nightmare.

We may have to rethink this logic.

This Made Me Laugh

Can you imagine the Leftist environmental wack-a-doos hanging a golden frame embossed picture of John D. Rockefeller on the wall behind their Greenpeace CEO?

Right.

Rockefeller is their arch enemy.  He’s the God Father of the American Oil Company.  And there could be nothing more evil.

However, as The Coyote points out in his recent article in Forbes:

Between 1870 and 1900, John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil company came to dominate the oil refining business, at one point controlling 90% of US capacity.  Long before the proliferation of the automobile created a market for gasoline, the main use for petroleum in the 19th century was to make kerosene, which was an illuminant for lamps.   Due in large part to Standard Oil, over these decades the price of kerosene dropped from 30 cents to 6 cents a gallon, while production increased astronomically and the quality of the product steadily improved.

Through Rockefeller’s work, kerosene became both cheaper and safer to use than whale oil, and quickly began to replace it in the marketplace.  By 1890 the American whaling fleet had already dropped from a peak of 735 ships to just 200, and was still falling, in large part due to low cost kerosene produced by Rockefeller’s Standard Oil.

In the last half of the 19th century, whales were facing extinction.  They were hunted in large part because their oil was the best, most affordable illuminant available to growing western nations.

How ironic is it that only because of, not inspite of, big oil can these Leftists heartily shout:

Save the whales!

Asses.

Sizing the Job

My dad grew up on a farm.  And I don’t think they had lot’s of money.  But they had lot’s of hard work.

So, growing up, my lesson from dad was:

Size the job, identify the tool.  Buy the one that’s one size too small.  Make up for it in working harder.

As an adult, I’ve learned that his advise is bullshit.

Here is my lesson to my son:

Size the job, identify the tool.  Buy the one that’s one size too big.  Make up for it by drinking beer spending time dreaming of better ways to do things.  Innovate!

As proof of my lesson, the crappy “one size to small” miter saw I bought 5 years ago broke.  My buddy reminded me of my own lesson and I bought a new saw today!

The larger lesson, in work in politics around the house is this:

Leverage your mind not your muscle.

More Election Good News

And the hits just keep coming in!

There’s been a lot of election talk this week, but there was also a historic union vote within Delta Airlines. On Wednesday, 20,000 Delta flight attendants came within 328 votes of unionizing.

Awesome!

People understand what is good for them and what’s bad for them.

And they gravitate accordingly.

Well done Delta!

The Tea Party and The Gay Vote

Tuesday was powerful.  The shift in American politics was one not seen in 60 or more years.

In fact, if you go to the State level, the shift was so massive that it may literally have been unprecedented.  The number of State seats that shifted from the Democrats to the Republicans was devastating to the Democrats.  And it was virtually complete.

And behind the whole thing was the Tea Party.

Not the crazy loons the Left Wing trotted out in front of the news broadcasts to be sure.  But the disciplined message that we are focused on fiscal issues that impact the economy.

Liberty by Law.
