Citizens United

The 2012 election should be interesting.  If for no other reason than to see what the impact of corporations being on equal footing with labor unions and the press.

If, for example, the Teamsters are able to contribute and influence, if, for example, the New York Times can endorse  candidate, why cannot ACME Plumbing do the same?

This at least gives the impression that (1) corporations didn’t used to be on equal footing with unions and (2) they are now on equal footing. Both are questionable. Corporations have always had more power than unions and likely always will. Citizens United enabled both corporations AND unions to donate more money to campaigns than they could before. Corporations accidentally drop more loose change on the ground than unions have ever had.

Well, unions are able to coerce admission; term of employment. After that, the union is free to campaign to said members by suggesting which candidates they ought to vote for; corporations can’t. Further, unions are able to extract dues as a condition of this coerced membership. Corporations can’t do that.

Now that corporations are able to contribute to PACs, the influence of the union is leveled.

  2. When it comes to free speech and contributing to campaigns, a union was apparently always a people . Now a corporation is also a people and some people do not like that .
