Rape, Violence, Assault and Murder: OWS

The OWS nonsense has gone on too long now.  If it isn’t enough that we have women being raped and individuals being assault, we have murder in the OWS protests:

OAKLAND, Calif. – Leaders across the country felt increasing pressure Friday to shut down Occupy encampments after two men died in shootings and another was found dead from a suspected combination of drugs and carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a propane heater inside a tent.

City officials have long been reluctant to enforce law on these protests.  I suspect in some cases the officials are actually on the side of the OWS folks.  And in other cases, were afraid of the consequences.

Well, the time has past for the protesters; it’s time to move on:

Late in the afternoon, police officers acting at the direction of Mayor Jean Quan distributed fliers to protesters warning that the camp violates the law and must be disbanded immediately. The notices warned campers they would face arrest if tents and other materials were not removed, although the warnings did not say by when.

It’s time, children, to put your fun signs away, go home and shower, and try to find meaningful other things to do with your life.

This movement is officially over.

  1. And the tea party was all racist because of a few things some crazies say. Left or right, they always cherry pick the worst of the other side to discredit the average folk. In this case it’s probably not even OWS folk, but a few bad apples that saw a crowd and just hung around. To use that to discredit OWS? Absurd.

Scott, Oakland is having massive problems with OWS. There are major instances of law breaking. Further, the situation in the corporate owned park in New York is such that they actually have to set up women’s tents.

We knew this was going to happen. The Left is incapable of organizing movements that don’t degenerate into what we’re seeing. Any message they MIGHT have had is drown out in the massive scream of violence that is OWS. To date, they don’t have any one single thing to show for the chaos they have created.

  2. Why do you define things in left right terms. As big protest movements go OWS has been amazingly peaceful, organized and effective. Any big protest right or left that draws so many people in so many locations will have a few bad apples. The organizers hate those folk because they draw attention from all the good things they’re accomplishing. Moreover, there is no massive violence. It is an extremely peaceful well organized set of global demonstrations. Calling it massive violence is to focus on a few cases that make up (wait for it) less than 1% of the movement. The 99% + who are well behaved and doing what COLIN POWELL said is quintessentially American (Powell said OWS was “as American as apple pie” — Powell is hardly a left wing ideologue!) are the real story.

    • Why do you define things in left right terms.

Mostly because that’s how things are framed in America.

As big protest movements go OWS has been amazingly peaceful, organized and effective.

I disagree. As big protests go, the Tea Party is peaceful, organized and effective. OWS is not that. OWS has rapes, it has theft, it has thuggery and vandalism. Arson too. And now, finally, there is murder. There isn’t one example of any of those activities taking place in all the Tea Parties. And OWS is only weeks old at this point. Soon, as they wear out their welcome and get shut down, you will continue to see more and more violence.

The organizers hate those folk because they draw attention from all the good things they’re accomplishing.

Well, we disagree on the amount of good works they have done, but I find it deliciously ironic that the movement doesn’t wanna include elements that they don’t “want”.

Calling it massive violence is to focus on a few cases

Well, my quote was describing only Oakland.

Powell said OWS was “as American as apple pie” — Powell is hardly a left wing ideologue!

And, to an extent, I agree. Protesting is exactly that. Doing what OWS is doing isn’t.

  3. The tea party was pretty small in comparison to OWS, had only a few big rallies and didn’t ignite anything global, so I think OWS has already eclipsed the tea party (which seems to have died out). I don’t believe OWS has rapes and thuggery. I believe that if you’re in an inner city and mingling with lots of people from that region as well as homeless those kinds of things can happen, especially if they are there day and night for monts — lots of undesirables can mingle in with your crowds, people not there for the cause. Blaming it on OWS seems a real stretch. Powell was talking about OWS, by the way, not just any protest. So even a high level Republican military hero disagrees with your take! I haven’t followed Oakland’s closely (and certainly one city is not the global movement), but I did see that a lot of veterans are involved in OWS, and there have been claims of police brutality. Now one could look at what a few bad cops do (here or in other instances) and then say all cops are like that. You could look at Abu Ghraib, the rapes that have been a problem in the US military (many women have complained) and the killing of innocents in Iraq and easily jump to broad claims against the US military — some on the far left have done it. That’s the exact same kind of logic you’re using, and it’s invalid when used on the left against the police and US military, or on the right against OWS. At least think about it — are you being too quick to make such blanket judgments against them because you don’t like their movement, just as many who defend OWS might be too quick to condemn the US military just because they don’t like a war?

    • The tea party was pretty small in comparison to OWS, had only a few big rallies and didn’t ignite anything global,

I’ll look for numbers. But I think the various Tea Party rallies were substantially larger than the OWS protests. However, you’re right, nothing global.

I don’t believe OWS has rapes and thuggery.

      Hmmm…..

At least think about it — are you being too quick to make such blanket judgments against them because you don’t like their movement, just as many who defend OWS might be too quick to condemn the US military just because they don’t like a war?

There are a number of reasons I’m so quick:

      1. I think it’s accurate on some level. The protests of the Left typically devolve into violence.
      2. I don’t like the movement.
      3. I am pointing out the logic of those who ridiculed the Tea Party.

  4. Scott,

OWS was compared to the Tea Party by the left, including you. The violence and low standards of behavior of OWS are fair to compare to the Tea Party because they have some similarities in that they represent political ideologies . To then make a comparison to the American Military , which has no similarities in purpose to a political advocacy group, is not valid .
