I Hope This Means They’re Scared

Another rumor floated by the Obama White House:

The White House spokesman was referring to a banner story on The Drudge Report that said Obama told a supporter that Romney would select Petraeus for the role.

It’s clear Obama needs to change the narrative.  If we focus on the economy he loses.  Not wanting to lose he is directing Reid to claim that Romney hasn’t paid taxes in 10 years and now he’s leaking that Romney will select the general.

In an absolute delicious dose of irony, here is the White House spokesman:

“Be mindful of your sources,” Carney said.

  1. He’d be a good pick, but I’d be shocked if he were chosen. He’s now got a good job as CIA Director, Obama looks likely to win re-election (intrade has him a 58.5% chance of winning), and being an ex-VP candidate leaves him politically exposed, no longer “America’s soldier” and limited in his future actions. Even if Romney looked more likely to win it would still be a risky move for someone like Petraeus.

  2. Drudge drummed up the rumors, not Obama. I suspect they actually came from the Romney campaign, with whom Drudge is close. Sort of a propaganda bit to distract attention, like the Rice story a couple weeks ago. Nickgb – Drudge is really close to members of Romney’s campaign so he’s not just going for publicity, he’s actively supporting Romney. Anything that appears in Drudge has to be read with that in mind.

Drudge reported the rumors. However, to Nickgb’s point, Drudge isn’t exactly sterling. Further, he’s playing in Reid territory; unnamed source.

There are supporters of both all over the place. KOS and HuffPo come to mind. Same may be said of TPM.

      • Kos is left of Obama, to be sure! But yeah, TPM and Huffpo seem the anti-Drudges (though especially HuffPo is much more interesting a website). Drudge needs a facelift though – it is much like it was in 2000.

Yeah, it’s tough to agree on sources. Those on the left won’t accept Heritage, CATO and Fox. Those on the right dismiss TPM, Brookings, Center for American Progress.

          Makes it tough sometimes.
