Gun Control

I’m guessing the tragedy in Colorado is going to get us all talking gun control again:

WASHINGTON (CBS News) The carnage in Aurora, Colorado has re-opened the nation’s debate about gun control. The issue came up after the 1999 Columbine massacre, but has largely been dormant since former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot 2011.

For the record, I think I’m moderate on gun control.  I support owning guns however I don’t think citizens need access to all forms of firearms.  Further, we should all agree that not all people should be able to own a weapon.

  • Kids
  • Felons
  • Terror watch list members
  • Perhaps controlled substance addicted individuals

I don’t know, just that we can agree that some people should be restricted.

With that, here’s my question:

Would you want the front row in that Colorado theater armed or not armed?

Or.

If you were in that front row in Colorado, would YOU want to be armed or not armed?

  1. I agree with you for the most part. I don’t think everyone should be able to own a gun, or be able to conceal and carry a gun. A hunting rifle and personal protection is one thing, but does the average citizen really need to own an AK47 that can shoot 600 rounds per minute? What are you hunting?

Also, Holmes was able to order 6000 rounds of ammunition online and have it delivered to his house. Shouldn’t a purchase like that raise a flag somewhere? Why would an individual need 6000 rounds of ammo?

Now, here is where I have a personal struggle. I bitch all the time about the government getting involved and regulating things where they shouldn’t be, but in this case, I guess I am on the fence.

To answer your questions, I’ll start with the second one. Me? I do not carry a gun. I have never felt that concerned for my life or been in a situation where a gun would have helped me. This is a one in a million situation, I am not going to start carrying a gun to the theater on the off chance that this will happen again, when I am in the theater, in the front row.

With that said, I am sure there are some people who will start carrying guns now. I’m sure there are people out there that carry guns because they are paranoid, scared or whatever, of something like this happening. Do you want someone like that sitting next to you at theater?

I guess what I’m trying to say is, in most cases, the folks that think they need to carry a gun are the ones that probably shouldn’t have one.

Yup, that sums it up. We don’t want people walking around with 50 caliber assault rifles.

I think the government does have roles. Not as many roles as some would like, but there are very valid areas.
