You Need A License To Fish

You know, when I read about the story that suggested parents have their children taken from them if those children are morbidly obese, I recoiled a little bit.  I mean, sheesh, have we really come to that?  Are we really at the point where the state can take our kids if we aren’t feeding ’em like they think we should?

According to Dr. Ludwig, state intervention would involve placing a child in temporary foster care while his parents were taught about better parenting and weight loss. Removing a child from home would be used as a last resort, reserved for cases where the child has severe obesity-related conditions such Type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties and liver problems, the Associated Press reports. Rather than place the blame on parents, the goal of state intervention is to act in children’s best interests, and in some cases, it is “the only realistic way to control harmful behaviors,” Ludwig wrote.

Shouldn’t a parent be able to decide what’s best for their children and government be damned?

Then I saw this story:

Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police charged a father with misdemeanor child abuse Wednesday after his 3-year-old daughter left home and walked across four lanes of traffic on Lynn Road.

The girl was not injured.

Aaron Harris Rush, 27, of 920 Hearthridge Court, told police that he was home asleep because he “stayed up until 6 a.m. for no reason,” according to court documents. His bond was set at $1,000.

Police said the little girl, Katelynn, crossed Lynn Road and then walked several blocks down North Hills Drive before someone noticed her and called police.

It turns out that parents often times don’t have their kids best interests at heart.  For example, thousands of children are born to Democrats everyday!

I kid.

But back to the point.  If I wanna catch a fish here in North Carolina, I have to have a license.  To catch a fish.  Because if I don’t have a license  I might…um, well, I might endanger the population of fishes.

If we can arrest parents for endangering their kids, and we rightly should, is it THAT far of a stretch to think that maybe we should require parents to obtain a license to have a child?

  1. It’s such a slippery slope. I’m all for holding parents’ responsible for their children’s health and safety, but do we start pulling kids out of homes because the parents smoke? (I wish we could!)

Let’s face it – the fact is we live in such a P.C. world we create a society which protects the bottom-feeders of our society and actually promotes childbirth at the lower end of the spectrum. This goes completely against nature. One shouldn’t have to have a license to have kids, but they should at least be able to pass an I.Q. test to show they can properly raise one.

You’re right, it is slippery. We clearly take kids out when the parents physically abuse ’em. Certainly the same logic can be used when discussing other forms of abuse?

This is absolutely true. Incentives matter.

We require people to be able to demonstrate that they are able to support raising a pet before we let them adopt a cat. It doesn’t seem out of line to require them to do the same for a child?

I’m clearly talking crazy talk, just taking our regulations to their logic conclusion?

  2. I sometimes look at women with kids in Walmart or some place like that. So often they scream at their kids, slap them, and then check out buying beer and cigarettes. At times it really makes me sad, I see this beautiful three year old girl in a cart with a mom (and sometimes a dad) who is likely to teach them to be lazy, unhealthy, and angry. What young child deserves that? I know kids are resilient, and yes, it’s crazy talk to really require good parenting – that’s a cultural issue, not one for government. Still, just think — if our kids were all raised to have values of hard work, compassion, responsibility for ones self and community spirit, maybe we wouldn’t need much government!

      Most excellent!

  3. pino ,

I agree with you on principle . I do not trust our enlightened officials not to abuse their power . But,,, and it is a big but, there are kids who are not just a little over weight. There are kids morbidly obese who have parents that will just keep stuffing the kid like a Christmas turkey . There is a point where something has to be done .

In that same vein , I know dog owners who have taken beagles and turned them into penguins . You can not stop these people from stuffing food down the throats of their kids and animals without removing the object of their love .

Again I hesitate to give our government Kommisars that power ,, but .

      I know. I know, it’s tough.

What I’m really playing at though, is the Left’s love of regulation and government intervention. I trying to drive in the irony and see if there’s a point where enough is enough for them.

y favorite example is their need to ban Happy Meals because a kid can’t decide for herself yet they support abortion without parent consent laws.

  4. The happy meals ban is the kind of stupidity you would get in California, primarily San francisco . So maybe we just do not give that kind of power to any Californian government employee and take our chances in the other 56 states . Ever since Obama miscounted the states , I can’t resist .

      Cali-francia.
      Francifornia

      LOL!
