Irony

I like going to the YMCA to work out.  Mostly I like going to the tavern after I work out for a beer.  But this is my story so we’ll just go with the whole YMCA thing.

In recent months, the YMCA has shifted the way it market’s itself.  They’re moving away from the “YMCA” towards a more general “The Y”.

Meh.

Who cares?

Then I saw this:

Interesting, huh?  Even catchy.

Ramblin’ Rose Triathalon.

Now look closer:

Pure awesomeness!

The YMCA, in an effort to be more gender neutral, has a “Women Only” event.

Freakin’ Leftists 😉

  1. Dude, the “C” stands for “Christian”, which they still espouse on the website. Trust me, this isn’t leftists.

    • Dude, the “C” stands for “Christian”

I swear to you this is true.

6-8 months ago I was sitting in the hot tube, I’m relaxing and chillin’. I’m looking around and I notice:

An elderly Chinese couple; the old man and I have discussed Buddhism in the sauna.
An Iranian doctor that immigrated to America years ago.
A Palestinian father and son who disagree about politics, as fathers and sons are wanten to do.
An Israeli Jew who just likes the facility.

Personally, I could give a shit about the specific religious leanings of an individual. In fact, I happen to think that when each of us in the hot tube pray at night, or morning, or during finals, we are praying to the same spirit, but whatever.

My point is that “C” is as limiting as the “M”.

I like it that way, for what it’s worth. I’ve enjoyed conversations with most of those folks; the Chinese woman and the Jewish guy not so much; neither hangs out in the men’s sauna 😉

  2. Phil, this is the first time you’ve heard of Ramblin Rose?? The Y is just sponsoring the event, but they didn’t create it — it’s always a women-only event…& take it from a female triathlete, though I’ve only done regular tri’s, I’m certain that they are nicer and way less intimidating sans men

      Yes.

Hmm, me thinks I didn’t do a good job writing this post.

I meant it to be funny in an ironic kinda way. I have no problems with women only events. Just as I have no issue with men only colleges.

I found the timing of the whole YMCA to Y and the advertising of the women’s only event to be delicious.
