In Which OWS Differentiates From The Tea Party

Heard this morning on 106.1 WRDU that the guy who shoot up a local grocery store, then took his own life, was a member of the Occupy Raleigh movement.

Members of the Tea Party:

  • Obtain and pay for permits to demonstrate
  • Go home when the time is up
  • Clean up after themselves
  • Have jobs
  • Stand for something
  • Don’t shoot people
    • The irony that the Left complains about Tea Party folks bringing guns to their protests isn’t lost on me.

These are not the 99% folks, they just aren’t.

      A homeowner on Marshburn Road called 911 after finding the body of Tariq James Taylor, 21, in a barn behind the house. Authorities have not said how Taylor killed himself.

      Wendell Police Chief Vance Johnson said Taylor shot a man and two women inside the Food Lion, at 2837 Wendell Blvd., around 7:15 p.m. after a domestic dispute with his partner, Jason Jeffery, who works at the store.

      Police said they charged 20 people with second-degree trespassing in connection with the protest:

      • Margaret Earls, 30, of 127 New Bern Place in Raleigh
      • Tariq Taylor, 21, of 490 Prospect Court in Pembroke
      • Benjamin Carroll, 33, of 100 Hill St. in Carboro

    Fair enough, it looks like this guy was arrested in conjunction with Occupy Raleigh. I assume that it’s fair game to characterize the whole group based on one person, then?

    When we talk about the Tea Party being racist, it’s because there were substantial racial overtones to the signs and displays at many different protests. Find me a OWS protest where people waved signs saying “We promote domestic disputes!” There’s a substantial difference.

    More to the point, these people are still the 99%. The 99% includes a lot of criminals. It also includes a lot of non-criminals. It’s the 99%, it includes a lot of people. It probably includes you, even. Just because you want to defend the 1% doesn’t mean it’s not against your own interests.

      We probably differ on “substantial”.

      Find me a OWS protest where people waved signs saying “We promote domestic disputes!”

      To be certain, if, in the calm of rational conversation, the OWS folks claim that they are not about violence and would most certainly support complete legal action against Mr. Taylor if he had been found before he took his life. This is exactly the same sort of expectation I would have if the same opportunity were granted the average Tea Party guy.

      It probably includes you, even. Just because you want to defend the 1% doesn’t mean it’s not against your own interests.

      I have to admit, it’s a clever marketing effort. As you say, the 99% includes me and indeed, most people I know. However, they don’t represent my views or positions. In fact, I doubt very much that I’d get much opportunity to guide the direction of the local organization at all, if even a little.

    I think enough of the OWS lived in unsanitary conditions to characterize the whole group as pigs. I back this up with a story of the sanitation workers who had to deal with what OWS left.
