I haven’t posted this in awhile. How much does health insurance cost?
In my ZIP code, a 30 year old man with no wife or kids can get coverage for $66.05 a month.
Are the uninsured really uninsured because they CAN’T be insured or because they CHOSE not to be insured?
Well, an un-married 30 year old is just about the cheapest to insure person there is (21 years old would maybe be even a little cheaper). Young people who are uninsured are often uninsured because they think they can get away with it. But there are a ton of people (older people, the infirm, people with pre-existng conditions) who would probably need to add a zero (likely significantly more) to that number in order to get insurance.
This is part of the idea behind Obama’s plan. Get the men and women in the 21-35 range who don’t always pay for insurance to do so. The added money in the system will better enable insurance companies to handle the higher costs for less desirable clients (the elderly, people with pre-existing conditions, etc..) and keep premiums affordable.
Also, if you’re unemployed and in your 20’s/30’s, as many are in this economy, $66 a month is still a significant expense.

I just got a quote for a single 60 year old man: $216.94. AND it allows an HSA.
Then I did my family, husband/wife and 2 kids. $317.62. Again, it allows an HSA.
I tend to think that people who are uninsured are choosing to be uninsured.
The screen shot of the quote shows a deductible of $5,200, so the person will need to pay over five grand before the insurance company pays anything. If a person does not have five grand, there are very few reasons to purchase the coverage.

I understand.
The point of insurance isn’t to make it so an individual doesn’t have to pay anything for their own health. The point of insurance is to prevent what Obama and the Liberals refer to as “going bankrupt because you get sick”.
I often bump into young folks, coming out of college or new in their careers. I always advice them to take this option. But this policy and pay the 60 bucks. THEN contribute money to the HSA; tax deductible and you can invest it. Once you get that HAS account to $5000.00, you have an insurance policy with, in essence, a zero deductible.
Actually they need to get the balance up to $10,000 because a hospital stay in December of one year my continue into January of the next year. They will burn through two years of deductibles.

The point is that insurance is meant to guard against a catastrophe. Even if it does end up costing 10k, that is WAY better than assuming the whole cost of the event.
How about those who don’t have the ability to support themselves? I.E. those people with abnormalities?
Would they get an insurance too? And how much are they going to get?

The current debate is centering on “the general public”.
I understand that in any such system, there will be cases that fall out and require special attention. But THAT should be a separate conversation.
