An Argument In Favor Of Guns

There has been tons, I mean TONS, of reporting lately on the negative aspects of an armed citizen.  Let us not forget the benefits of said armed citizens:

Henderson, N.C. — Police are investigating a fatal shooting Sunday at a Henderson home that appeared to result from a home invasion.

Deyon Durham, 24, of 279 Faulkner St., was found shot to death at 1221 Montgomery St. shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

The initial investigation suggests that Durham was breaking and entering at the home when the homeowner, whose name was not released, shot him.

I understand that the scene in Henderson remains a tragedy; a young man in the prime of his life has perished.  But the home of an innocent citizen has been defended.

And, just like in the face of numerous other tragedies around the country, there is a back story that may have prevented the tragedy.  In this case, how was Mr. Durham free in society?

Durham had convictions, starting in 2005, for indecent liberties with a minor, sexual battery, breaking and entering vehicles, larceny and failure to register as a sex offender, according to state Division of Adult Correction records.

In parallel to those tragedies that are gathering more media attention across America, this one could have been prevented by methods other than taking guns out of legal citizen’s hands.  Perhaps, for example, by locking Mr. Durham up.

  1. There are other stories of private gun ownership saving lives and stopping crime . You will rarely hear of them in the media . All we ever get are the stories of guns killing innocent people . And as far as gun laws not working to stop violence, we have the example of Mexico . Regular citizens are prevented from defending themselves from drug cartels, kidnappers, and corrupt government .

  2. Homer Simpson once called alcohol “the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.”

I think there’s a tendency to argue guns are one or the other and the truth is somewhere in between. So what makes me angry is the suggestion that we can keep going down the path the NRA has us on, which is a path that assumes that guns are nearly always the solution and rarely the cause of any problems. Sure you can find examples where a gun saved a life – maybe even a whole bunch of them. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a form of gun control, one that’s more stringent than what we have now. I think it’s a form of gun control that responsible gun owners might even embrace – because it does what it can to keep guns out of the wrong hands, and also ensures that the guns/ammo on the market are designed for proper uses – hunting and self-defense.

I happen to agree with you on this one.

I’m fully in favor of gun control. I don’t think that we need assault weapons and high round ammo clips. I’m for pretty hard registration processes . I’m persuaded by the need to register guns.

My only fear is that the folks clamoring the loudest don’t want reasonable gun control; they want the banning of guns.

  3. I don’t think you can keep guns out of the hands of violent people with out disarming everyone . Where did the felon who shot the firemen get his guns ? I believe the more you speak of it the more people will buy guns . It’s okay to disarm others , but not me . That is the attitude . Pino is definitely right, there ain’t such a thing as reasonable gun control because give em an inch they take a mile . I watched one Democrat on my favorite channel MSNBC who said that no hunter needs more than a 3 bullet clip in his gun . I will not argue that point, but his intent is to limit capacity , which to gun owners I know ain’t reasonable .
