Cary, NC: Libertarian Mecca

A Chicken Hen

Who knew that Cary, NC of all places would be the rebirth of Libertarianism in North Carolina?  Heck, perhaps in America the rate we’re going these days.

It used to be that you could grow your own food.  Most likely, you HAD to grow your own food.  Then, like minded people got together and said that you could no longer grow your own food.

And now, they are changing their mind.

Cary, NC used to be a little rural farming town years ago.  Then North Carolina created Research Triangle Park, RTP.  This would draw significant amounts of research, manufacturing and technology companies to the area.  And the boom times came.  Now, Cary is a significant city in it’s own right.  Nestled up against Raleigh, it boasts a large and growing population.  And it’s shed its rural history.

But that might be about to change, if only a little:

Cary, N.C. — A petition requesting that Cary lift its longtime ban on backyard hens will go before the town council Thursday, and the issue has picked up support from some surprising sources.

This will be the third time in four years that the council has considered allowing residents to keep a small number of chickens on their properties, but this time around, Councilman Don Frantz is on the opposite side of the fence.

See, in years past, Mr. Frantz didn’t feel that chickens had a place in Cary.  Well, to be strictly honest, he felt they had a place just not the backyard:

In 2008, Frantz said the only chicken he wants to see in Cary is on a plate.

Funny joke.  But now, the good Councilman has a change of heart:

It just came down to: Who the heck am I to tell other folks what they can or can’t do if it’s not going to hurt me?

God bless him.  And God bless you and your chickens too!

  1. I’ve been to Cary a number of times on business and had no idea it was the farming town that you mention years before that.

This post reminds me of how much money my family used to save when I was a kid and had 80 acres with a huge garden and some livestock. It adds up!

Yup. RTP changed all that. These days Cary stands for:

  2. This was a big debate here a couple years back, I had forgot about. But it seems our two-year test run is up this summer….

I haven’t seen (or heard) any changes around the neighborhood, anyway.

They’re quieter than dogs, safer than cats, for the song birds anyway, and without roosters are pretty decent “pets.”

I may actually set up a coop after reading this. However, I live in the county and don’t need permission!
