Herman Cain

I’ve stayed silent on the Herman Cain sex scandal issues.  Part because I’ve learned the hard way the price of reacting to bad news reporting.  And part because I’ve needed to set my thoughts.

With that said, here are the pertinent issues:

  1. Did he do it?
  2. Does it matter?
  3. Is there a double standard?

I think the biggest of the three is #1.  Did Mr. Cain in fact abuse his position and make unwanted advances towards women?  I resonate with the fact that the 90’s were a period of escalated reports of abuse.  However, I also resonate with the characteristics of powerful people.  Personally I think that there is a large enough pattern to suggest that something iffy is in play.  Do I think there is a case of abuse?  No, I don’t.  Do I think that he may have suggested a “sex to play” kinda scenario?  Yes, I accept that possibility.

Then, #2, does it matter?  I would suggest that America doesn’t think it does.  We elect all kinds of crazy and we do it every year.  Personally I think it DOES matter.  It suggests a certain character.  And further, I think it suggests a somewhat lack of discipline wielding power.

Last, is there a double standard?  Absolutely.  Neither party has grounds to stand on when it comes to moral failings.  And they should stop in this bickering.

  1. As with Clinton before, I could forgive misbehavior easier if there wasn’t such an effort to evade. The “4th” woman sounded very convincing, and if she’s making it up that certainly will come out. Yet Cain is adamant in his denials. A person unable to admit wrong doing who, in fact, may be willing to attack a person who has been wronged to protect his skin, does not deserve to be President. If he came out and admitted it openly and apologized and said he learned his lesson, I think he’d actually have generated sympathy.

Now it’s possible he’s telling the truth, but I have my doubts and when choosing a President I want such doubts minimized. I also agree character matters. For a President it is at least as important as political philosophy.

I’ve heard she did sound convincing. And yes, he’s remaining pretty adamant in his denial.

I agree, abuse of power is gross.

There sure does appear to be a pattern emerging.

  2. The first day of the sex scandal, Cain claimed that there never was a settlement paid. The next day he “vaguely” recalled the situation. The next day he remembered a bit more. His only hope is to tell all the juicy details now. If he just told the truth on day one, this would all be old news.

I was listening to my local radio station this morning. They mentioned that this is turning into the same story as the Anthony Weiner debacle.

    They’re right.

  4. I think the fact he’s from the business world hurts him here — he’s used to calling the shots and being in charge. As a candidate you have to actually play the political game and be sensitive to the public image. I think he just can’t comprehend how a few “nobody” women could undo what he increasingly thought a very possible chance to become President. His strong point was he isn’t a traditional politician. Unfortunately for him, that also may be the cause of his undoing.

      Yeah, I don’t know.

I’m willing to believe that in the business world, sex and sexual advances are more common than we think. Especially in the upper echelons. Am I’m willing to believe that he did what he’s being accused of. And I’m willing to believe that these women knew what they were getting into and are opportunistic people. I’m willing to believe all of it.

Right now, all we have are a bunch of stories. On none of those stories paints positive pictures for any of the characters.involved. Cain or any of the women.
