So, my son belongs to a dojo down the street next to the pizza joint. On the other side is the dance studio that my daughter belongs to.
As I bounced back and forth tonight, my son to karate and my girl to dance that I noticed the Sensei mopping the mats and the studio owner sweeping her floors. I asked each, individually, why they had to dedicate time for such tasks. My question:
“Why don’t you just hire one of the kids to do this?”
Their answer? Each of them?
“It costs too much to pay someone to do this; it’s just easier to do it myself.”
And so it is that 2-3-4 kids who might have had the chance to step on that first rung of the job ladder are out of luck. If I know kids, they don’t need the money, they need the experience. The experience of showing up on time, listening to a boss and meeting expectations.
I started working when I was 10. My dad got me a paper route on my birthday. I’ve been pulling a paycheck for the last 30+ years. I graduated high school, graduated college and have been a member of the work force for more than 3 decades. And it is THAT experience that has allowed me to succeed to the extent that I have.
So, live with the fact that when you price labor out of the market, they will not be mobilized and you will lose years of experience.

I totally agree. Our liberal friends have so much political power, that getting anything changed is doubtful. They have no clue and do not want one about how minimum wage, health care , and all the other mandates kill jobs. Look at the crap on the liberal blogs on labor day . I saw pictures of 19th century child labor and sweat shops on their posts. Changing things to them means going back to the bad old days. Demagoguing is their response to everything .

I think “Labor Day” should be changed to be a day to celebrate expecting mothers.
Similar to you, I worked any and all jobs and have never been without one since I was fourteen. A lot of people today (both kids and adults) seem to have entitlement issues that prevent them from taking jobs “beneath them” when they’re needed.
In regards to the owners, however, I would be curious to know what they consider their time to be worth and would argue that perhaps its really not the price of (minimum wage) labor that truly makes them prefer instead to just do the work themselves. You see this with owners and hiring additional adult staff, too – all depends on what they measure.

I saw the longshoremen subject in the Wall St. Journal today. They sarcastically remarked that even this NLRB cannot ignore the incident .
I find it interesting that Liberals think that health care is more important than unemployment. They point out that Texas leads the nation in uninsured. This is, of course to bash Governor Perry. But, think about it. Liberal elites only worry about their personal unemployment as it pertains to political power . The unemployment rate affects them only in that it denies them power . The Liberal lower classes have a large percentage of people who would not be working if times were good. If you are on SS, disability, or welfare the unemployment rate is not as important as whether you get free health care . To this group, these are not the worst of times.
Under President Bush when unemployment was much lower, Liberals constantly said how bad things were and that they would not be satisfied with those conditions once they took power . Now with extended unemployment and other economic opium , Obama and his enablers in the media are trying to convince Americans that this is the new normal and no Republican could have done better, or will do better in the future .

Well, minimum wage laws are unique. Over time, they become irrelevant. When they raised the wage this last time I couldn’t find a job that even started out paying the minimum wage.

There certainly is a degree of “if you want something done right….”. However, it’s hard to justify paying that kinda money for that kinda work.
